SMA STUDY MORNING
Saturday 19th FEBRUARY 2022
09.15 Welcome from Paul Medlicott
Talk 1: Eyal Lederman
Functional Exercise Prescription
In this lecture, Eyal presents a revolutionary new approach for exercise prescription that uses the individual’s own movement repertoire. It demonstrates how daily activities (“the life gym”) can be modified to provide the necessary movement challenges to support movement rehabilitation in many musculoskeletal and pain conditions. Hence, all activities can become remedial without the need to prescribe unfamiliar exercise; in other words, ‘how to exercise without exercise’ or ‘how to rehabilitate without exercise’.
People recover from most musculoskeletal and pain conditions through three key processes: repair, adaptation, and alleviation of symptoms. The speaker explains how to identify the individual’s recovery process and how to select the appropriate daily or sporting activities, and how they can be altered to support these recovery processes.
Functional Exercise Prescription is a dramatic departure from the traditional strength and conditioning models that have been used for rehabilitation. The book explores the limitation of these models and explains how they can be replaced by functional daily activities. It provides the practitioner with practical tools to construct a tailor-made plan for each individual to help expedite and optimise their recovery.
All human physical activity is exercise. Life is your gym.

Talk 2: Kathryn Thomas (Kitty), Co-Kinetic
The Foot: “Looking from the Bottom Up”
The foot is an amazing, albeit very complex, piece of anatomy that for the most part, we take for granted. Without our feet there would be no standing or walking - they are our only point of contact with the ground. And for a relatively small body part, they carry with them a gigantic weight of responsibility. Understanding the anatomy and its role in balancing strength and stability with dynamic multi-directional movement is critical in both healthy and injured patients. This presentation with cover key components of the foot's biomechanics, core muscle system, arch architecture, and the role they play in daily function, running, and sports. Common foot problems will be discussed looking at ways massage, foot posture correction, and exercise therapy may help in recovery. A key take-home message is ‘don’t forget to look down at the feet "and don’t forget to look up from the feet". Essentially the entire body is connected bottom to top and too often painful areas are managed in isolation without seeing the domino effect one body part has on another.

TALK 3: Dr Jeremy Lewis
Reframing how we manage musculoskeletal shoulder conditions
In this presentation, Jeremy will discuss controversies surrounding the management of musculoskeletal shoulder problems and in the time available will discuss issues relating to assessment and imaging, posture, and surgical versus non-surgical management. He will conclude with suggestions regarding how to reframe the management of musculoskeletal shoulder conditions.
