Update on Fascia Science - Translating the research into clinical practice

Content: In this short presentation, Clinical anatomist and fellow of the SMA John Sharkey delves into the cutting-edge field of fascia science, providing an update on his, and that of his colleagues research findings including the implications for your clinical practice. Fascia, the connective tissue network that pervades the human body, has gained increasing attention in recent years for its role in health, movement, pain and dysfunction and John is recognised as one of the leading voices pioneering the importance of fascia in manual and movement therapies for more than thirty years.

John will provide powerful educational images supporting the fundamental role of fascia in movement and metabolism highlighting its structure, composition, and functional significance. This fun and motivating presentation will highlight recent discoveries that will reshape your understanding of fascial anatomy and physiology.

Furthermore, John will address the challenges and controversies surrounding the translation of fascia research into clinical practice, discussing areas of consensus as well as ongoing debates within the scientific community. Emphasising the importance of evidence-based approaches and interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing our understanding of fascial health and its clinical applications.

Participants will gain a deeper appreciation for the role of fascia in human physiology and pathology, as well as practical insights into integrating fascia science into their clinical work. As a SMA member your important work and the positive contribution you make to your community will be informed in a positive way as you harness the power of fascia science for improved patient outcomes.

Biography: John Sharkey is an international educator, author and authority in the areas of Clinical Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, human movement and the manual treatment of chronic pain using European Neuromuscular Therapy. He is recognised as one of the worlds leading authorities on fascia and Biotensegrity. He is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies (JBMT), International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine and other professional journals.
